Washburn lands six All-MIAA selections with Jung named Player of the Year - Washburn University Athletics (2024)

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Washburn women's tennis landed six players on MIAA All-Conference teams released by the conference on Wednesday afternoon including the player in the year in the conference Maja Jung. The Ichabods begin MIAA Tournament competition on Friday in Edmond against Central Oklahoma beginning at 1 p.m.

Washburn received recognition at four singles positions and all three doubles spots and for the second straight season had the MIAA Player of the Year after Sonia Smagina took home the award last season.

On the season Jung went 25-6 in singles with an 18-3 mark from No. 1 while going 23-7 in doubles with a 15-4 record at No. 1. She earned first team honors at No. 1 singles with a 7-1 record in conference play and an 8-1 record against nationally ranked opponents. She has won her last seven matches entering the tournament.

Lara Schmid was a second team selection at No. 6 singles, posting a 9-10 record overall in singles on the year but going 4-0 from No. 6. She was 2-2 in conference play with one win over a ranked opponent. She has won her last three duels.

Renske Ubachs went 17-11 overall on the year to be named an honorable mention at No. 2 singles. She is 12-7 from No. 2 with a 5-2 record in conference and a 13-8 record overall in duals. She has two wins over ranked opponents and has won her last five matches.

Isabella Martensson receives honorable mention honors at No. 4 singles after going 12-9 overall on the season. She was 3-4 from No. 4 and 3-5 on the year in conference play. She went 11-8 overall in duals on the year.

Lara Schmid and Maja Jung also took home first-team honors at No. 1 doubles after posting a 21-7 record together this season. The tandem went 13-4 from No. 1 and 4-2 in the conference. They have a 5-1 record over nationally ranked opponents and went 13-4 in duals for the year.

Maddie Shelley and Renske Ubachs join them on the first team as the pair of sophom*ores were selected at No. 3 doubles. The duo posted a 20-5 record together this season going 18-4 in duals and 14-4 from No. 3. They went 6-2 inside of the MIAA.

Isabella Martensson and Peyton Koper completed Washburn's three-for-three run in doubles with the duo earning honorable mention honors at No. 2. They went 12-6 together this season with an 11-6 record at No. 2 while going 4-1 in MIAA play.

The Ichabods begin MIAA Tournament competition on Friday in Edmond against Central Oklahoma beginning at 1 p.m.
