On Worlds Ocean Day on June 8th I took my kids to snorkel around the fringing reef off Low Isles near Port Douglas. We saw first hand the impacts of the recent flooding from Tropical Cyclone Jasper which smothered the coral in sediment. The ocean covers over 70% of the planet. It is our life source, supporting humanity’s sustenance and that of every other organism on earth. The ocean produces at least 50% of the planet’s oxygen, it is home to most of earth’s biodiversity, and is the main source of protein for more than a billion people around the world. Not to mention, the ocean is key to our economy with an estimated 40 million people being employed by ocean-based industries by 2030 (which we enjoyed on Saturday). Even though all its benefits, the ocean is now in need of support. With 90% of big fish populations depleted, and 50% of coral reefs destroyed, we are taking more from the ocean than can be replenished. We need to work together to create a new balance with the ocean that no longer depletes its bounty but instead restores its vibrancy and brings it new life. #RPS is working on some key projects in #DouglasShire to improve water quality, understand our anthropogenic impacts and avoid, mitigate, then offset these impacts. It’s a truly amazing place to live and work and the resilience of the natural world to bounce back after significant impacts is amazing and gives me hope that my grandkids will enjoy the same, or even better snorkeling trip in years to come!

Was great to get my hands dirty and see all the volunteers out planting natives along the Wangetti Trail this morning. Can’t wait to take my kids mountain biking along the first stage later this year and point out the trees I planted. 🚵🌳 Minister Michael Healy was full of praise for our Project Management team who have got this project back on track - literally! #rps #community #rehabilitation

It’s now proven that native trees can provide better bank stabilisation, reducing landslide risks and controlling erosion. 🌳🙌So rather than jumping straight to hard revetment, it might be worth reviewing native regeneration as the first priority. 🍃This article is timely given the recent heavy rainfall in FNQ, for more details click below. 💧

Plant more native trees to reduce landslide risk, control erosion, say researchers phys.org

Congratulations Mayor Amy Eden and the Cairns Regional Council Councillors who took their Declaration of Office at CPAC last night. Was a great open and inclusive ceremony, and we are looking forward to working with the team over the next term. Go #teamcairns
